I have an issue that still appears in the kanban backlog as a subtask under a task. However, when trying to select it, I get an error saying the issue doesn't exist. Using all manners of trying to display it outside the kanban board seems to indicate that, in fact, it does not exist.

At issue is the LAST one in the list in the attached picture. If I open the containing issue, it is not in the subtask list. If I try to go directly to the issue key, it doesn't exist. How might I find this issue if it is just in a bad state OR clear it off the list?

I would first of all reindex and then check whether the issue is still showing on the board.

Yup. That was it. I moved last night's snapshots to test instance and that indeed cured it
