Isolate gadget code from the jira source code

Hi!

My problem:

I wanna replace (or add new) "Project" gadget in the dashboard. Why? 

When I try "Edit" this gadget, there are projects list, but It's very uncomfortable to use (multiple selection with 100+ projects it's horrible). I wanna replace this list to simple checkboxes. 

I found code of this gadget, but I have one big problem. I don't know how isolate this gadget from the rest of code. 

Any ideas?
