Is there anyway to alter the colour of issues in the product backlog according to their status?

For example, I'd like the functionality to automatically highlight items red if they are on hold, or for them to turn green when they are "ready" (meet a set of pre-determined conditions - a separate issue).   This would increase the immediate transparency of items that are on hold, blocked, ready to be picked up into a sprint

@Tom Buchanan , for basic card colors, you can always use the JQL and tie the queries to the Statuses. As far as more complex queries, you would need some app to extend the basic JQL capabilities. This will however, only add a colored bar to the left side of the issue. 

I believe there is an app in the marketplace that will change the color of the entire card.

Thanks peter, actually discovered the JQL solution shortly after i posed the question, should work for the time being.  Will look into apps also.
