Is there an option to create a new JIRA board or build the existing one with matrix lanes?

Vishesh Bansal November 8, 2021

I would like to divide the work of my team into 2 parts. All the people in the team will remain the same but due to our nature of work it would be easier for the devs to and myself to have 2 JIRA board instead of 1. So, we wanted to explore the option of having the current lanes either in a matrix pattern (if that is possible) or have a whole new JIRA board for it. If either is a solution that exists, I would appreciate some guidance/material for it.

Thanks!

Hello @Vishesh Bansal

Welcome to the community.

Can you provide more details about how you would expect the board to display with matrix lanes? I don't think I know what you are trying to describe.

Also, are you working with a Company Managed project or a Team Managed project? It will say at the bottom of the navigation pane on the left. If you are working with a Team managed project, those support only one board. Well technically you can make additional boards for Team Managed projects using Saved Filters that reference the project, but the boards don't operate like the natively created board does for the Team Managed project, so I recommend against that option.

@Trudy Claspill After some more research, I think creating a new board is the sole option.

I am in a Company Managed Project. If I create a new board, are there ways to connect the 2 boards?

Thanks!

@Vishesh Bansal

For Company Managed projects you can create Saved Filters to specify the issues you would want displayed in a board, and then create a new board based on the Saved Filter. Refer to

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/create-a-board/

You can create as many such boards as you want. Keep in mind that boards are just a way to view and manage issues the "live" in projects. If the filters for your boards overlap concerning the issues they will retrieve, then the issues will show up in multiple boards. If you want to divide work in one Project into two boards, you will have to have data in the issues that will clearly distinguish in which board they should be displayed, and then construct saved filters accordingly to show just the issues you want in each board.

I'm not sure what you mean by "connect" the boards. Can you provide more details on what you are trying to achieve when you say that?
