Is there a way to automatically open recurring tickets in Jira?

marshallmm January 20, 2022

For my job, there are a lot of promotional series that happen frequently (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc.). In order to keep me a bit more sane, I wanted to see if there was a way to automatically open a ticket based on a script? It mainly a convenience thing, but I'm sure that it will help down the line.

Example: I create tickets for an email series, and I want one to start work on 1/1 and the next on 2/1, next on 3/1, and so forth.

Yes, you can use Jira automation for this - BUT when you automatically create tickets you run the risk of them getting out of hand.
Many places use automatic ticket creation, but unless your team is actively managing their tickets - you may end up with lots of open and ignored tickets because you've removed the human element of making sure you actually needed them each time.

Warning aside, check out Jira automation, you can have it select a specific ticket and clone it (you may wish to have it do lots of things after-the-fact, like update due-dates, descriptions, etc).  That can be set up to happen every X days, weeks, etc.

I suggest tracking all tickets created this way with a label (or a field) and making a dashboard or 'stale' ticket warning so you don't lose sight of automatically created tickets.
