Is there a gadget to track the sprint OTD and cycle time over time?

Vinay Shreyas August 13, 2024

I want to create a dashboard to track the following:

1. Sprint OTD over time

2. Cycle Time - Average time spent per story point over time

Please let me know how I can create such a dashboard? I know we have the sprint velocity chart using which we can calculate OTD manually, but I am looking at ways to get OTD automatically inserted into the dashboard. For Ex: I want to see a trend line of sprint OTD numbers in percentage.

Hi @Vinay Shreyas,

By OTD do you mean On-Time Delivery or something else? Why would you need this in the context of a sprint?! Same question for Cycle Time per story point?

Jira does not provide any native gadget for velocity or cycle time. A solution would be to search on Atlassian Marketplace for apps that provide such gadgets.

If you are willing to install an app, our Great Gadgets app could be a solution.

It offers a Team Velocity gadget that displays the velocity for the past sprints. You said that you can determine ODT by looking in the Jira report. If so, you will be able to determine ODT by using this gadget as well, because it displays the data (and much more) from the Jira report.

In addition, you could determine the average cycle time for the issue in your sprints by using Cycle Time Control Chart gadget or Cycle Time Trend gadget offered by the same app.

Cycle Time Control Chart gadget

You could configure the gadget to calculate average cycle time for the issues from a sprint. It displays the average.

Cycle Time Trend gadget

You could configure this gadget to calculate average cycle time for the time intervals corresponding to your sprints (if you have 2 weeks long sprints, setup this gadget to use intervals of 2 weeks). It displays the average for each interval as well as the overall average.

Hi Danut,

Thanks for your answer.

OTD:

Yes, by OTD, I mean On Time Delivery. I would like to track the OTD for each sprint over time. For Ex: Sprint 1 OTD = 90%, Sprint 2 OTD = 85% Sprint 3 OTD = 95% and so on. The way we calculate OTD = Story Points Completed / Story Points Committed. I can manually calculate the OTD by looking at each sprint data, but I am looking at options to automate and monitor OTD data over time.

Cycle Time:

Thanks for the Cycle time trend gadget suggestion. What I am trying to achieve here is to be able to calculate the average time spent per Story Point. For example: the team completed 45 story points in sprint 1 and 55 story points in sprint 2, for a total of 90 story points for 2 sprints (20 working days in total, considering 2 weeks sprint), then the average time spent per story point would be 20/160 hrs = 0.125 hours per story point. I would like to automate this reading and track it. Is there a way?

Hi @Vinay Shreyas,

Thanks for clarification.

OTD:

The Team Velocity gadget that I mentioned above can calculate OTD based on your formula. In the chart is appears as "% completed".

The gadget is highly configurable. You can choose to display only OTD (% Completed) if you want.

Cycle Time:

With the current app version it is not possible to calculate this metric based on your formula. And honestly I'm not aware of another solution.

But, in my opinion your calculation is incorrect, because you don't consider the number of people that worked during sprint. So diving to 160 would work if you have just one person that worked. If you have a team of 5 people, shouldn't you divide SPs to 800 (160*5)?

Hi Danut,

Thanks for your inputs.

Team Velocity gadget:

Good to know its flexibility, is there a way to extract only the OTD numbers to either JIRA dashboard or to Excel sheet? I am interested in the numbers (85, 90, 95 and so on) only and I do not want the chart or visuals.

Cycle Time:

I see your point! I was trying to calculate cycle time at the scrum team level and not for individuals, but you made a good point, I need to rethink. :)

Vinay

Hi @Vinay Shreyas,

The Team Velocity gadget can display a Data tab with the numbers if you check the "Show data table" in the gadget settings. You can export the data in CSV format for further processing in Excel, by clicking the export icon.

Have you checked if this gadget is available in your Jira instance? You may already have the app installed.

Thank you so much for the clarification, Danut! Yes, I see the Great Gadgets available on our Jira instance.  Will use them :)
