Is it possible to change workflow status in the edit issue dialogue box?

We're looking to reduce "inbox noise" and notifications sent out when an issue is updated in JIRA. An e-mail notification is sent out when assignee is changed, and again when workflow status is changed (2x e-mail notifications). Is it possible to to edit the workflow status (transition issue from one status to the next, i.e "in development" to "in QA") in the "edit issue" dialogue box?

There seems to be two questions here. First something about too many emails, but I'm not sure where there's an actual question.

Secondly, the bit about Status editing. Status is not a field, it's a display of information about where the issue is in the workflow. To "edit" it, you have to go through a transition. You could try bodging the status field so that it enables a user to perform transitions, but it's not going to change the fact you still need to go through that transition (and it's still not an "edit")
