Is it possible to automatically assign an issue to the reporters manager?

We want to build an approval workflow in Jira that automatically sets the assignee of the issue to be the manager of the reporter.  I can see in User profiles that Jira knows who the users line manger is but how can I access this a smart value to set the assignee?

Are you referring to an Jira's default settings? Or perhaps to the third-party app "User Profiles for Jira" (UPJ)?
