Is it best to upgrade JIRA plugins first before upgrading JIRA?

Dan Sitarski
December 26, 2013

We have 6 JIRA plugins that can be upgraded and are supported for JIRA 5.2 - 6.1.5. We are currently running JIRA 5.2 with the intent on upgrding to 6.1.5. What is the recommended approach for upgrading JIRA and its plugins?

If the plugins are supported in both versions, it is probably best to upgrade them first. Especially if the current version is not supported in 6.1.5.

If the current version is also supported on both JIRA versions, there is no technical gain. By upgrading plugins separately, you can isolate any possible issues, that's all!
