There are three different ways for column configurations to appear:

1. Default configuration - globally set by the admin, what is shown when searching for issues if you have not configured columns yourself

2. Configuration saved with a filter - when creating a filter, you can configure the columns so that anyone able to view the filter results will see them as you intended

3. Personal configuration - what you have configured for yourself

You say that you get them to appear a certain way in your filter results and then they are not displayed the same way in the dashboard - what filter are you viewing in the dashboard that is not displaying them correctly? Is it a default JIRA filter like "Assigned to me" or is it a saved filter created by a user?
