Importing a CSV into JIRA and the fields are not available to map?

Kellie McWhirter August 28, 2025

Screenshot 2025-08-28 at 11.15.12 AM.pngI have been trying to import a CSV into Jira, but I keep getting errors.

The first way I attempted to do it was by going to the 3 dots on the right and selecting "Import work items from CVS." I kept getting errors.  The next way I tried was by going into the System settings, then "external system import", and I was even going to just make the new project and move the tickets over. Once I got to the mapping fields screen, I was unable to find some of the fields to link them to, even though the custom fields exist in Jira. I will attach a photo of what I see. For reference, the Google sheet has. values such as money, dates, names, emails, yes/no dropdown, multiselector, etc. It is not a simple Google sheet; it is very complex.

Hello @Kellie McWhirter

Without drilling into specific fields...

Are you trying to create a new project as part of the import process or import into an existing project?

What is the project type into which you are trying to import data? You can find the project Type in the information available on the project list page:

https://<yourBaseUrl>/jira/projects?page=1&sortKey=name&sortOrder=ASC

Have you confirmed that the fields into which you want to import data

  • exist in the Field Configuration used by the issues you are trying to create through the import? (applicable only if your target is a Company Managed project)
  • exist in the Create Item/Issue screen that you would see in the UI for the Project and Issue types you are trying to create?

Beyond that we would need to start looking into the specific fields you are trying to fill and research if the field exists, if they are included on the correct screens, etc.

Thank you so much for responding!

I tried both ways - the first way I attempted to import into a project that already existed, and it's a software project. I received several errors stating that the date format was incompatible and that certain fields were null. There were several more errors, but apparently I didn't save the info. The second way I created a new project, and that seemed easier; however, several of the fields were not shown as an option (the screenshot above). When I searched for the field, the option was not there.

When trying to go through External System Import were you using the old import experience or the new import experience available there?

  • Were you trying to import to an existing project or create a new project during this scenario?
  • When trying to import to an existing project was that project listed as Team Managed or Company Managed?

When trying to import from the All Work screen (where you clicked the three dots button)

  • Were you trying to import to an existing project or create a new project during this scenario? I don't use that option, but it appears that you can only import to an existing project.
  • When trying to import to an existing project was that project listed as Team Managed or Company Managed? It appears that only existing Company Managed projects are available in this scenario.

It will be easier to debug if we can focus on a single scenario at a time, clearly defining which options you are choosing as you step through the process.
