I want to use JQL freeform query box in jira 3.12.3

Iain MacGranthin March 7, 2013

Hi,

In a previous role I always used the freeform query box to search issues in jira as a user, and found the search sidebar really painful and not rewarding. Complex queries cannot be created.

Now I am in a new project, and have admin rights to jira v3.12.3 ...

Is this feature available either in jira 3.12.3, or as a plug in for 3.12.3, or was it introduced for a later version?

No. JQL doesn't exist in version 3.

If you want any of this functionality, you either need to rewrite Jira 3's entire search system, or upgrade to version 4 or above.

Ouch!! That just made life a little more complex...

Yup - the main reason for version 4 was the introduction of JQL from what I could see! It included a lot of other stuff too, but ripping out the entire search engine and effectively writing a new one was the main point. Even the "simple" search in version 4 isn't what it was before, all it really does now is quietly translate the parameters into JQL in the background!
