Plans in Jira are basically used for big-picture planning. They help teams look across multiple projects and answer things like: what are we delivering, when will it happen, what depends on what, and do we have the capacity for it?

The main thing to know is that Plans is the newer name for Advanced Roadmaps. So it is not a completely new feature it is mostly the same planning capability, just presented more clearly inside Jira.

Right now, the general understanding is that Plans are meant for:

• cross-team planning
• timeline and release forecasting
• dependency tracking
• capacity planning
• testing changes before saving them into Jira

A simple way to say it is:

Boards are for managing daily work, while Plans are for seeing the bigger picture.

Also, Plans are mainly available in Jira Premium and Enterprise, so they are aimed more at teams that need coordination at a larger scale.

Plans in Jira (previously called Advanced Roadmaps) help teams plan and organize work across multiple projects in one place. It gives a clear roadmap where teams can see what work needs to be done, who is responsible for it, and when it is expected to be completed.

Using Plans, teams can view tasks, epics, and timelines together, track dependencies between tasks, and plan future releases. This makes it easier for teams and managers to coordinate work and keep projects moving smoothly.
