I added a new status + section in my board to drag cards onto, and now all those cards are gone.

Hey all, I added a new type of status called "In Development", and then further added a new column on our board called "In Development" for those cards, so we could drag cards from "In PR" to "In Development." This worked fine, we did it today and there were a few cards in that column. Now they are all gone. As is all history of them. We can't find them by searching in Active or Backlog, and they aren't part of the current sprint any longer. Not sure what to do here, but this is pretty alarming.

Not sure what other information is required.

Yeah so it turned out we needed to adjust this "board query" which can be accessed from it's settings. Very confusing UI around this - did not realize JIRA was more configuration over convention.

Can you find them with a plain issue search, rather than just the boards?
