How to receive e-mail notifications when items within my project are updated or added

I need to understand how to set up e-mail notifications, so they are sent to me, when changes are made to Jira tickets within my Project or when new items are added.

The project notification scheme controls what roles, groups, or users get notified for what events. The Jira admin controls it.
