How to move an issue on several boards and how to maintain its position?

Almighty Drake December 3, 2023

I use several different kanban board while on some the issue should move when it is moved on other kanban boards but I want some issues not to be affected by their movement on other Kanban.

Is this possible to control that?

I am grateful for every answer.

best regards

Hi @Almighty Drake,

Yes and no. When you drag an issue to a different position on a board, you update its value in the rank field. That determines where the issue is relative to other issues in Jira.

Technically, in the database, an issue is not on a board. It is in a project. And updating the rank as such reflects this position in a project. Multiple boards may display the same issues, but that is nothing more than a visualisation of those issues and adding features for users to manipulate these issues. Nothing more, but also nothing less.

So, in short: dragging an issue to a different position on a board updates its rank relatively to other issues. If these issues are present on a different board (and that board is also ordered by rank (!)), then you should expect the issue to move in that other board as well. It is not possible to reflect this movement in some boards and not in others, simply because the ranking system is linked to the underlying projects, not a board.

Hope this helps!

Hi @Almighty Drake ,

What problem are you trying to solve when having issues in different boards? I wonder if you could use quick filters to address that use case.

In general I want to have a kanban board which display the overall workflow or the whole process of the project. and there are only epics on it (except for the backlog)

And on several mini kanbanboard I want to display one single segment of the process with its progess in the three columns (TO-Do-in progress-Done). However it only displays Stories or Tasks. When the story with its tasks are in done, I want the epic on the general board to be moved one column up, so you dont have to act on the general board - only on the several mini kanbanboards.

However when the Epic is in the general workflow kanban board, it also moves automatically in the small ones, which i dont like. I want to have it the other way around only.

I hope you understand what i want.

Best regards
