How to make remaining estimate field mandatory when time spent exceeds original estimate?

We are tracking time log which is automatically calculated. However few times we faced issues that time taken to complete a task exceeds the original estimate. At that time remaining estimate is not updated. 

Since remaining estimate is not updated we dont know how long it is required to complete the sprint.

So the solution we thought is, if time spent exceeds original estimate-Then we should ask developers to update remaining hours.

Is this possible?
