In the past I would sometimes add fields to issues to contain data for searches but not viewing.  These fields would only be present on the edit screen.  Now, Jira Cloud has merged edit and view to expose fields that should have been hidden.  How can this be fixed?

Hi @Rob Horan,

If you goal is to hide those fields from being visible at all, you can accomplish this from the Issue layout menu option in the project settings.

It will display all the visible fields on the left and all of the hidden fields on the right.  Simply drag the fields you want to hide to the right hand panel.

If you are wanting to keep the fields "visible" for searching but not being displayed, I don't think that is possible but the closest you can get is to add them to the bottom of the Context fields list, if you have enough fields listed a number of them will be hidden by default and require users to click a "show more link" to view them.

They would still be visible but not as obvious.

I hope that helps!

Thanks - I appreciate that, but it still doesn't quite cover it.  First, not every type of field can go to the context section - multi-line text, for example.  In any case, that doesn't prevent people from viewing it completely.  The fields need to be editable but not seen on the view screen.
