How to check the velocity of the current sprint

jan.ambroz October 3, 2023

Hi there,

Is there a way to check the remaining velocity of the current sprint?
I would like to see how many story points remain in the current sprint.

For example, if capacity is 50 points and I added issues with 30 story points, I would like to see that there is still capacity for 20 more story points. This is possible to see when planning the sprint but I did not find a way to see it in active sprint.

Thank you

Hi @jan.ambroz

I am unclear what you are asking, so perhaps you could clarify your question.  That may help the community to offer suggestions.

To help align on some concepts and Jira behavior:

  • Velocity is a measure of the completed items for a completed sprint.  For Jira, this would be in units of whatever the selected estimation measure is.  e.g., story points
  • Jira can show the velocity on the Sprint Report, the Velocity Report, and on the different burn charts
  • You describe "capacity", which you seem to mean as a forecast of the number of story points to complete in a future sprint.  There is nothing built-in for Jira projects for this, but I believe there is some capability for capacity forecasting in advanced roadmaps.
  • You also describe using the capacity during sprint planning.  On the Jira backlog, the number of story points for issues added to a sprint is visible, and so if you know a forecast (i.e., capacity) you could do the math to see the difference.

Yet you seem to be asking about the remaining velocity for the current, active sprint.  I am unclear what you mean by that.

Why wouldn't the team have already determined their capacity before the sprint started, during planning, and so planned accordingly?

Do you instead mean: what is the total number of story points for issues not yet completed in the current, active sprint?  If so, that can be seen in the backlog, on the burn charts, and on the sprint report.

Kind regards,
Bill
