How to adding Spike as a new issue type and place it in the proper hierarchy level

David Ferber March 27, 2025

I want to add Spike to our issue type as, for out cloud load, it was not part of the standard load. The need is to added and put it in the proper hierarchy to be at the same level as a story.

Hi David - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Go to Settings > Issues > Issue Types

There you can add the Spike issue type. Then go to Issue Type Schemes, edit the desired scheme and add the Spike to the list of other issue types.

However, I am curious where you are wanting to place it in the hierarchy other than where it will be created as normal at Level 0.

You’ll find it right in the documentation: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/add-edit-and-delete-an-issue-type/ . Just add “Spike” as a new work type and select “standard issue type” to create it at the same level as stories and tasks.
