How to Update JIRA 3.13.4 to 6.4 or 7

• This should go without saying, but back up everything first.
• You must upgrade to 4.4.5 before upgrading to more recent releases.
• It generally isn't necessary to stop through other versions on the way to the latest.  Unless you have a good reason to do otherwise, you should go directly from 4.4.5 to the latest 7.1.x.
• If for some reason a direct 7.1.x upgrade fails, then you should contact support.  They will likely be able to help figure out what is going wrong and whether or not stopping in 6.4.x on the way is likely to help.
• You should generally jump to the latest that you can.  The older the release you are on, the less familiar with it support will be if you find yourself needing assistance.  Additionally, we end support for minor (second digit) releases 2 years after they ship, which means 6.0 is already end-of-life and 6.4 only has about a year left: https://confluence.atlassian.com/support/atlassian-support-end-of-life-policy-201851003.html
• We generally only patch older releases to address critical security problems.  Barring special circumstances, such as participation in the Premier Support program, any bugs you reported would only be fixed in 7.1.x.
• If you want to be especially diligent in selecting your target release, you can search on jira.atlassian.com for any known problems in that release.
