How to Group By Queries on a Jira Board

Steve Goodwin July 29, 2025

The new Jira UI includes a Group By "Queries" option, but it's not clear how to specify the queries. I added some quick filters to see if this is where the "queries" should be specified, but I got nothing.

Where do you specify the queries to be used when selecting Queries under a board's Group By drop down?

Hi @Steve Goodwin

You have to configure it in the board configuration, swimlane, queries.

Hello @Steve Goodwin

When you create a quick filter you are adding your JQL query in the JQL field, since quick filters only work by JQL.

Hello @Steve Goodwin

The Group By: Queries option is available only in boards created from Saved Filters or the boards created for Company Managed Software projects.

To set the Queries that will be used click on the ... button next to the board name and select Board settings.

Then expand Layout and click on Swimlanes.

On the right then change the Select method value to Queries.

The page will change to allow you to define Swimlanes based on Queries that you add.

Hi @Steve Goodwin , thanks for your post.

As far as I can tell, grouping by queries is to group by the objects that are retrieved by the JQL query for the board...

If I change, instead, the group to be by Assignee, or something else, I get swimlanes for each Assignee, each Project (in this board, there is only one).

I tried to look for documentation but I don't find an explanation of this.

What is it you are trying to do / achieve?

Cheers
