How is the Agile field 'Sprint' drop down list populated?

A new project was created and the Story issue type screen has the Agile field 'Sprint'. When creating a new Story, the Sprint drop down list is populated with sprints names that have nothing to do with the new project. The project does not have any boards created yet, so, obviously no sprints.

What explains the values in the list?
