How does Atlassian monitor account activity — and does API usage count?

Hi community,

I received an email warning that my Jira app atlassian.net would be deactivated on 2026-07-14 due to inactivity. I wanted to understand how activity is measured and what I can do to avoid this happening in the future.

My situation: I have a Jira user account that I use primarily as a bot/automation account. The account interacts with Jira constantly through the Atlassian REST API using a Personal Access Token — creating issues, transitioning statuses, querying projects, and logging work. However, this account rarely logs in through a browser or the mobile app.

My questions:

  1. Does API activity (REST API calls via PAT) count as "account activity" for inactivity monitoring purposes, or does Atlassian only track browser/app logins?
  2. Is the inactivity warning at the site level (the whole Jira app) or the user account level?
  3. What is the inactivity threshold — how long before a warning is sent and before deactivation occurs?
  4. Is there a way to exempt an automation/bot account from inactivity deactivation?
  5. Does opening the board in the Jira mobile app count as activity?

Any guidance from the community or Atlassian staff would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @Nehemiah Rynok

To answer your questions:

  1. No this doesn't count as activity.
  2. This is for the whole Jira app
  3. Warnings will be sent before the threshold number of days, I can't say exactly. Deactivation will happen if none of the active users logged in for 40 days.
  4. No there is not, user login ( from any user listed on the site) is required
  5. I'm not sure, but I remember that if you log via the app on the instance this is counted as activity.

Hello @Nehemiah Rynok

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

In addition to the information provided by @Marc -Devoteam- you may find this article I recently posted helpful. It includes the inactivity threshold and when the warning emails are sent, based on my experience. in the past 6 months..
