A bug was created with a parent linkage to an Epic. How can that linkage be deleted? I want the bug to stand alone.
Hello margaret.lee@dzsi ,
The Workaround offered by @Dave Rosenlund _Trundl_ is most likely working on his end as the Parent field is being cleared during the move to the new project as the field is not present in the alternate projects field configurations.
However, What @Bill Sheboy mentioned sounds like the process you are looking for.
But just to add a little bit more elaboration to fully round out the behavior at play here, this Epic-to-Story hierarchy relationship used to be tied to the Epic Link field, but was replaced by the Parent field, so searches for Removing Epic Link can help identify additional resources for alternate solutions just note Replace Epic link with parent in workarounds mentions to get the desired results.
The full detailed breakdown of the features hierarchy changes and connections is covered here:
But removing an issue from the parent epic can be completed by clicking into the parent field and selecting the "X" icon at the right side of the field in edit mode like this:
And once removed the field should show up blank like this:
If the option to edit the Parent field by clicking into the field is not available then the field is most likely missing from the Edit screen in the field configurations OR you are missing the "Edit issue" project permission.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Earl
Welcome to the community, margaret.lee@dzsi 👋
To break the sacred Parent link in Jira, you need to Move to the Bug to a different project temporarily (I keep a "foo" project lying around for this and other purposes). Then, if desired, you can move it back to the original project.

Hi Dave, I moved the bug to another JIRA project "B", but it kept the linkage to the Epic (which belongs to project "A:"). Moving the bug back to project A naturally kept the linkage to the Epic.
To summarize:
Existing linkage:
Project A -> Epic (Project B) -> Bug (Project A)
I want to remove the Bug from the Epic in Project B.
I don't know how someone was able to create that linkage in the first place. Note that Project B is a Kanban project while Project A is a Scrum project.

Hmmm.... I cannot reproduce this behavior, margaret.lee@dzsi. I.e., it works for me as described above. Let's escalate this to Atlassian (you don't need to do anything, I can do it from this end).

Hi margaret.lee@dzsi -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!
When viewing the Bug, have you tried selecting the Parent field and using the X at the right side to remove the Epic linkage?
Kind regards,
Bill

While in the Bug, I see the Parent epic on the right hand panel, and the only thing I can do is click it. This takes me to the Epic.
In the Epic, the Child Issues section has the bug, and there is a "-" that I can click, with 2 options: a checkmark or an "X". I selected X but nothing happens (nothing happens when I select the checkmark either).
Recall, the JIRA hierarchy is:
Project A -> Project B Epic -> Project A bug
I want to remove Project B Epic from this linkage chain.

Bill, the original JIRA hierarchy I wrote on June 12 was incorrect, I have corrected it now to the one listed in today's comment.

Would you please compare what you are seeing to the images @Earl McCutcheon posted, showing the "X" at the right side of the parent field?
If you see something different, please post an image of an example Bug including the parent field. Selecting that "X" should remove the Epic connection to the Bug.
