How do you perform a complex numerical calculation?

John pappas November 15, 2018

I would like to find the velocity of my scrum team for each quarter.  Our set capacity is 175, but our actual work per quarter is usually higher.  We want to know if we are 100% of capacity or 117% or 93% etc...  Is there a way I can create a JQL query to give this type of information?

Hello John,

The best and more complete solution that you can use to get this information is the plugin Velocity & Capacity Forecast Calculator.

This plugin provides you with the following information:

  • Time Logged: The total amount of time logged on all issues relating to your JQL query
  • Number of Days Logged: The total number of calendar days where individuals logged time.
  • Estimate Accuracy: The overall percentage that a JQL query was over or underestimated. 0% represents perfect estimation accuracy, a positive percentage represents overestimation, and a negative percentage represents underestimation.
  • Average Daily Velocity: This is the average number of hours logged per day within your JQL query. This number can be multiplied to come up with your sprint velocity.
  • Average Daily Estimated Velocity: This metric is extremely powerful for project forecasting. This is your Average Daily Velocity but with the Estimate Accuracy applied to it. This is useful when trying to accurately forecast a project's completion.

Please, let me know if this plugin is what you are looking for.

Patterson - The report looks great.  Will it be able to handle associate time off and holidays within the current sprint?

Hello John,

How are you planning to configure your time off and Holidays on JIRA? Are you planning to use Tempo plugin?

I'm not sure how it would work, but I believe the report will be able to handle all the data coming from JIRA, including Holiday configuration as well.

I'm not sure.  This is the reason for the question.  These are aspects of the planning we have to consided in order to ensure the sprint will get completed by the end of the 2 weeks.  Right now we are using Rally and the scrum master does it manually in an Excel spreadsheet.  Looking to get away from that manual process to promote a Lean environment.  Our business should be fully on JIRA by the beginning of 2019.  Is Tempo another JIRA plugin we will need to make the other report work?
