Seems like this should be simple to do, but it seems like the only way to do it is to create a filter for the epic then tie the plan to the filter.
Is there no easier way?
Hello @Benjamin Peikes
If you want to use the native Plans features, that is one way to do it. It is the simplest way also.
What are other features that give a good view of an Epic and where everything is, dependencies, etc

Hello Benjamin,
Depends on how you want your view presented.
Plans is the only native feature that includes a graphical representation of dependencies between work items. That is the one specific thing you mentioned.
"good view" and "where everything is" and "etc." are a bit too undefined for me to make suggestions. ;-)
Third party apps might provide you with the views you seek.

@Benjamin Peikes -
Greetings and welcome!
Just to add another option to the mix, and in transparency, I am a content writer for the product, Agile Hive may be an option for you. We provide comprehensive dashboard reporting with planning stats (velocity, story points burned, etc.) as well as extensive dependency visualization and management.
If you'd like, give it a look. And please feel free to reach out with any questions, to set up a trial, or to have us walk through a demonstration of its capabilities. Best of luck!

Hi @Benjamin Peikes,
Not sure if I fully understood your request, but if you need a view such as epic burdown chart, epic progress, or epic breakdown, then this article might be useful: https://community.atlassian.com/forums/App-Central-articles/How-to-display-the-progress-of-Epics-or-Initiatives-in-Jira-or/ba-p/2858840
