I see how to add custom fields to each of my issue types, but none of them are "people" fields. In Classic we had a Developer field. Can't seem to figure out how to do that in next-gen.
as you noted it isn't an option today. I suggest clicking feedback and letting them know you are interested. I assume you are wanting a "user picker" field.
Ok, thanks! Yes a "user picker" field is exactly what we're needing.

Yeah this is an option I'd love to see. So I can easily find the developer who worked on a ticket and ask questions about. Typically now we have to find the ticket then ask the devs if they remember this and so on. Its very laborious. Instead I would like to see it right away and not waste the devs time. Cause sometimes the devs are no longer on the project or quit.

@John Matthews we added the "user picker" field Jack referenced above and it has worked very well for us - for exactly the reasons you said! With the assignee changing from the PM to dev to QA, and typically ending with the QA assignee it was difficult to track who had done the development. Since adding the user picker field that we named "Developer", this problem is solved. The developer field doesn't change, and it allows multiple people if there was any collaboration on the project.
