How do I use the Jira API to get a list of possible values for a custom multivalued field?

Sorry for the long question, but it's somewhat specific. I haven't used the Jira API much, but I feel it could accomplish a task of mine. I'm trying to pull all the values of a field similar to affectedVersion into a list.

editMeta in the REST API should do that, or do you mean the Jira Java API?
