How do I get an Epic drill down like shown in the image

Planyway's Table view lets you browse work items in a structured hierarchy (from Epics down to subtasks) instead of a flat issue list. Since it can display work from multiple Jira projects, it's easier to review initiative progress without jumping between individual boards.

Combined with Timeline and other views, it helps you move from a high-level status view to the actual delivery details — so you can see not only whether an Epic is on track, but also what work is behind it and what needs attention.

Jira does not provide such gadget. Have you also tried our Great Gadgets app? 

It offer many gadgets that can be helpful for creating executive dashboards.

For this specific case, I would recommend using its Pivot Table & Pivot Chart gadget configured to display epic progress as a table, or as a bar chart. 

And yes, our app has a gadget controller.

The image you shared is from Plans, and that type of hierarchy-aware progress view is one of the planning features Atlassian reserves for Jira Cloud Premium and Enterprise. Plans can combine work from multiple boards or spaces and roll progress up through the epic hierarchy, but they can’t be embedded as an interactive native Jira dashboard gadget.

Since the question shows Jira Cloud Free, there isn’t a native dashboard that’ll provide the same cross-board epic > story > sprint drill-down. Standard dashboard gadgets can report from cross-space saved filters, but each gadget operates independently and won’t behave like the controller shown in your screenshot.

The Rich Filters approach mentioned earlier is probably the closest dashboard-style option if you need a selector that updates multiple gadgets. eazyBI is better suited when the main requirement is executive reporting across quarterly commitments, epic status, child work, and sprints, but it’ll require building and maintaining the reporting model.

Before choosing between them, I’d clarify whether the priority is an interactive dashboard where executives select an epic, or a portfolio report showing all committed epics and their progress at once. Those are different reporting patterns, and the best app depends on which experience matters most.

The blunt version first: native Jira dashboards have no cross-gadget controller, and no app fully recreates what Plans does inside a dashboard. So the choice is really "which compromise".

• Rich Filters is still the closest to a controller — a rich filter controller gadget with a dynamic filter on the Parent field gives one-click epic filtering across every gadget on the dashboard. If it "lacked it" when you tried, check whether the dynamic filter was added on Parent; that step is easy to miss and without it there's nothing to drill by.
• If you're on Cloud Enterprise, Atlassian Analytics has genuine dashboard controls and drill-down — but it's Enterprise-only, not Premium.
• eazyBI is the heavyweight option: epic → story → sprint drill-down and quarterly commitment tracking are exactly its territory, at the cost of a real learning curve.

Although eazyBI is the most heavyweight option, it would definitely work for what you are trying to achieve. I have done that in the past. If you haven't used it before, it might be a bit overwhelming (as with any other BI tool) because of its power.

Hello @Radhika Vijji as others mentioned Jira doesn't offer this natively but there are plenty of 3rd party solutions that can get you the view you want.

As you mentioned you tried Quick Filters and Rich Filters, I know you like the dynamic reconfiguration of the dashboard, so if you're willing to try another option.

Millarum Dashboards is an alternative to the mentioned tools that offer some unique features, for your specific need, you can configure a Stacked bar chart to group by Parent and sub-group by status on a Percentage representation, then you'll get the specific view you're looking for.

Full disclosure: I'm the developer of a marketplace app that covers this, but let me start with the native answer since it's genuinely relevant.

Native options: What you're describing (the progress panel with drill-down) lives in Plans, which needs Jira Premium — and even there it stays inside the Plans view rather than a shareable dashboard. On Standard there's no native gadget for epic progress, and the Epic Report / Burndown are single-project. That gap is exactly what you ran into with the apps you tried.

How we approach it in Plugio Suite – Dashboard Builder, Charts & Reports for Jira: you build one dashboard whose scope spans any set of projects/boards (or any JQL), and compose it from widgets that all read that shared scope:

• Work item progress — the view in your screenshot: one row per epic with a stacked Done / In Progress / To Do bar and % complete, cross-project. Clicking a row expands it to the story-level list underneath (key, summary, status), and every key links back to the issue — the drill-down/controller part that was missing in the apps you listed. You can also switch the rows to any level or field (e.g. progress by assignee), and choose whether the bars count issues or sum story points.
• Quarterly commitment — set the dashboard's date window to the quarter (or filter to the committed epics with the built-in Epic filter) and add KPI number widgets for totals/%done next to the progress list.
• Sprint-level reporting — a dashboard can alternatively be bound to a board's active sprint (it rolls over automatically each sprint), so the same widgets report on the current sprint.
• Exact numbers — a pivot table with epics as rows × status categories as columns, for the people who want the figures, not the bars.

All of it lives on a normal shareable dashboard page, so it works as the single executive view you described.
