I'm using Jira for a software and scientific project. So, in addition to the usual work items that Jira already has, I need to create two new work items: Micro theorem and Experiment run. Each work item has a specific set of fields (which I've created) that I need to associate with it. I'm really confused by the Screen and Screen schemes, and I'd appreciate any help I can get to figure this out.
Hello @Leena Thampan
Welcome to the Atlassian community.
Can you tell us the type of Space where you want to use these new items types and fields? You can get that information from the Type column on the View All Spaces page.
Screens and schemes apply only to Company Managed Spaces.
Fields are added to Screens.
In a Screen Scheme the Screens are associated with one or more Item Operations; Create, View, or Edit. You may want a field available when an item is created so you put it on the screen associated with the Create operation.
Screen Schemes get associated to Work Item Types in Issue Type Screen Schemes. These schemes can contain multiple work item types. Each work item type is associated to only one Screen Scheme in these schemes.
Each Company Managed Space gets one Issue Type Screen Scheme associated to it. This determines which screens will be displayed for each work item type in the space for each of the operations.
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. It turns out that I didn't have to do any of that since I was able to get the fields and work types added directly in the space settings. It seems to be configured the way we want now. *yay* I also decided to go with a team managed space instead of the company managed space since our team is so small right now that the added complexity of configuring screens and screen schemes didn't feel like it was worth it. *lol*
