How do I assign an issue in post functions based on the project its in?

In our workflow, once an issue is created, it is auto-assigned to the Project Lead.  It then goes through the workflow and ends up in our QA status.  At this point, I want to auto assign to a QA lead based on the project it's in.  

Is this possible?

The easiest answer is to have different workflows for the projects and simply use "set field to" post-functions that set the assignee to different people.

That can be a bit clunky, especially editing a workflow when someone leaves or changes role.  I prefer to use more advanced functions from certain paid add-ons (assign to first person named in a role, for example).  I think there are some possibilities for free with "automation light" on Cloud.
