How do I add multiple collaborators to a Jira issue?

When creating a new Jira issue there is a "Collaborator" field which only allows selecting a single user. It is not uncommon for many people to collaborate on an issue. How can I add multiple collaborators?

Can you please let us know the type of custom field you have for "Collaborator" field? 

You can have multi select/multi line custom field type so that you can have multiple Collaborators.

The type is "User Picker (single user)": 

I cannot change the field type. When I try to create a new custom field there is no multiple choice option for a user picker.
