How do I add an Epic Name to my epics?

Matthew Ferguson August 11, 2020

There is no "Epic Name" field which I am able to add to my Epics in the Issue Type editor.  None of my Epics have names, so I am unable to use Epic Name in my filters.  How can I add Epic Names to my epics?

Hi @Matthew Ferguson

Is this for a Next-Gen project?

If yes, there does not appear to be an official "Epic Name" anymore for this project type. Summary is the only naming field.

The field is required for Classic projects, so it should not be possible to create an Epic without one in that instance.

You can of course created a separate field in Next-Gen if you need an additional short name/reference for an Epic - but it will be classed as a custom field.

How would I know if this is a Next-Gen project? I would assume it is based on what you are saying.

This is extremely frustrating, because I cannot create a filter that leverages the Epic Description or any other custom field I add to an Epic.  And if my project does not support Epic Names, why does the UI for creating Filters offer Epic Name as as an attribute I should use to filter tasks?

Hi @Matthew Ferguson

There's a few ways you can check:

  • Projects: On the top navigation bar, go to Projects > View All Projects. Search for your project and the "Type" column will confirm if it's Next-Gen or Classic.
  • Side-Bar: Under the project's name in the side-bar - it will state "Next-Gen software project" or "Classic software project"
  • Features: If the side-bar has an Epic-based Roadmap, it's Next-Gen

Issue Search is utilised for both Classic and Next-Gen projects across your whole instance - so there are fields specific to Classic which are available for those projects to use. Much like there might be custom fields which only one, specific project utilises but are still options in Search for everyone.

------------------

You can create a custom field and leverage it in a search. If this is a Next-Gen project:

  1. Go to Project Settings > Issue Types > Epic
  2. On the right-hand side is a "Create a Field" section. Choose a field - for example a Paragraph or Short Text field.
  3. Give the field a name and drag-and-drop it into the required position on the issue screen - then press "Save Changes"
  4. Go back to an Epic in your project and populate the field

^ When you've done this, the field will appear as an option to be utilised in Issue Search :)

------------------

If this isn't a Next-Gen Project though, let us know! Or if you have a specific need for a custom field, provide the specifics and I'll try to advise you further :)

It is a Next-Gen Project.  And it turns out, I can use the Summary field in my Filters.

Hi @Matthew Ferguson

Yep! You should be able to utilise any field in search which is available :)
