How do I add a color to the card background?

I'm on Jira Cloud with a next gen board.

I am administrator and this option is just not available to me. Is it a feature of next gen board?

Hi @apacio-paul  - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Unfortunately, that document is woefully out of date. And it doesn't apply to Team-managed (Next-gen) projects. 

It is currently not possible to add colors on that project type. You can vote for and follow along with the feature request here:
