How can I switch back to the Detail view when clicking a item I do not like the Preview Panel.

I want to revert to the Detail view when i click a item.  I don't like the preview panel as if find it to be limiting in what i need to do.

i also don't like the fact that Jira just decided to implement this change.  as a customer is should be able to tailor the look and feel of the product.  That from my understanding is one of the selling points.

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

It does not appear that there is an option to switch back as per:

Preview Panels will soon replace the detail view in Jira’s Global Search and List views 

As this is a user community it is not the best path for getting your feedback directly to Atlassian. I recommend you open a support case directly with them or use the Feedback option available in Jira under the Help menu.

On top of what Trudy said, there's a feature request related to this: JRACLOUD-96809: Provide the ability to disable the global preview panels 
I've heard a couple of our users saying the same thing - that it would be helpful to have an option to enable/disable this, whether on the user or global/site level.

I also prefer to use the middle mouse click (on Windows) to open a new tab rather than using the preview panel. 👀
