How can I import a project from Jira to BigGantt?

Beatriz Nascimento Mendes May 19, 2021

Hello community,

I've been using Jira fow the past few weeks and my team has been putting all our projects in there, just as well as all the tasks, issues and necessary info to complement the process claimed by each process. Therefore, we started noticing that the platform performance can't show our metrics the way we need to visualize them. With that in order, we decided to download the Jira's app called BigGantt, a application that shows exactly what my team needs to improve our performance an conquer our projects goals. Unfortunally, since we only started using the App a few days ago, we still can't figure out how we can transfer our projects from Jira to BigGantt, in order to see the metrics from the projects development in the Gantt graphs.

Furthermore, I was attached to the task of finding a way of doing this importation automatically, not needing to do it manually, one by one. Can someone, please, help me find out if that's possible? And if so, would you mind to explain me how to do it?

Best regards,

Beatriz

HI @Beatriz Nascimento Mendes

I am happy that you started to work with BigGantt. Before starting to work with BigGantt, I encourage you to get familiar with the concept of Boxes for a better understanding of how the plugin works.

Then, the first step is to create a Program Box in the Overview module. Once it’s done, you will be redirected to the Gantt module with a link to the Scope definition.

When you click on “set automatic rules to define the scope,” you will be transferred to Scope Definition. So two clicks, and you are in the place where you can define the scope of your Program. You mentioned that you would like to add the Jira Project. Please enter its name in the right field. See my image as a reference.

Anytime you want to change the scope definition by adding new Jira Projects, Boards, or Filters, please go to Box Configuration >> Tasks >> Scope definition.

Please, have a look also at our short video tutorial - How to manage Scope.

You mentioned about automation of the process. I'm am deeply interested in your feedback. Could you please provide me with more details and the expected outcome? Thank you!

Hey, Anna!

I'm so thankful for your answer, I appreciate  your instructions a lot. I know this may sound shallow, but can you please inform if there's the possibility of automatazing this process? According to your instructions, i need to manually add each one of my projects in a box, which means I need to creat a new box everytime I want to transfer a Jira Project to Gantt, and that's exactly what I want to avoid. Do you know if I can do this without having to move each project? But selecting a option where I can do them all at once?

Cordially,

Beatriz.

Hi @Beatriz Nascimento Mendes

Thank you for your feedback! It's very precious to us.

At the moment you can arrange your scope only in the way I've described in my previous post. Undoubtedly - the main advantage of this solution is the possibility of adjusting a Box scope to own business needs and create a defined collection of tasks based on a combination of multiple Jira projects, boards, or filters and display them all in one Box.

However, we are doing our best to make the plugin more and more user-friendly. Therefore we are currently working on implementing a solution that will allow managing the scope of a Box in the easier way; namely:

If there is not in the App a Box having a respective Jira Project in its scope definition, a user will have the possibility to create a new Box (e.g. Program Box) from a Jira Project context. A newly created Box will automatically have all issues from a respective Jira project added to its scope.

You can follow the functionality development works in the feature request ticket ONE-29020. Please note that it is best to open it in the incognito tab of your browser

Hello, Anna

I'm beyond grateful for your response in return of my question. The presented solution allows me to start evaluating the process of my BigGantt use, facing the ideia that my main necessity isn't being attended, I might opt for letting the app on hold, as a second option. Thus the explanation made your point very clear, and I still may need this application on a close future, I will inform my team about the gave instructions and let them know that we will problably, if chosen to stay with BigGantt, have to manually transfer the needed information.
I will also keep up with the develpping process and code given by you. Thank you for your time and attention.

Warmly,

Beatriz.
