So I have created a new nextgen project with over 300 issues is there a way to switch it back to the old style without having to retype everything?

yes, you can do this - refer to this article.

https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirasoftwarecloud/migrate-between-next-gen-and-classic-projects-957974933.html

In a nutshell, you'll have to create a new Classic project to receive your tickets, then query and (bulk) move the issues from you existing next-gen Project.

Hope this helps!
