How can I disable formatting for text copied in? It keeps adding a code-box.

Eric Katowitz February 9, 2024 edited

I  tend to write my change logs with indents for readability,  however Jira keeps interpreting it as code and I haven't been able to stop it.

In the past I got around this but highlighting the code box and pressing Ctrl+\ to clear the formatting,   however that no longer works.

Pressing Ctrl+\ does nothing.    If I try to access it via the toolbar the "Clear Formatting" option is grayed out.

So it was annoying enough that I had to do the workaround.....   but now even that isn't available so I have no choice but to save it in the code box,  which means I can't do any other formatting to it.

UPDATED INFO:  I am copying and pasting from Notepad++ and I've also tried using Ctrl+Shift+V to ensure I am pasting plain unformatted text and the issue still occurs.

Is there anything I can do about it?    Is there some trick to paste something and NOT have it auto-converted?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi @Eric Katowitz

I observed the same behavior from Notepad++, but I just found out that it can be generalized. Any text, from anywhere, pasted as plain text in Jira, will appear inside a code-box, if it has multiple level of indent.

Ways around it:

  • After pasting in jira, select the text from the code-box, then paste it as plain text in Jira again.
  • In Notepad++, insuring there is only one indent level can result in a normal copy-paste in Jira. There are exceptions though depending on your text structure and paragraph spacing.
  • Giving the text some formatting (ex.: pasting it in Word then copy-pasting it back in Jira).

Hope this helps

Dear @Eric Katowitz ,

welcome to the community!

The format is taken with the "copy&paste". What you could do as a work-a-round is to paste the text into a "dumb" editor of your choice. Then copy it again and the format is gone.

Or you search the web for "Paste as Plain Text in Windows".

I am using Linux and just by marking formatted text with the mouse and then pasting with the "mouse-wheel-button" removes any formats (no ctrl-c/v).

Bye

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

I didn't specify in my original post,  but I'm actually pasting from Notepad++ and I've also tried using Ctrl+Shift+V (which is for pasting as plain text in Windows).     I've since updated my original post with this information.

Thank you very much for taking the time to try and help me anyway,  and sorry if I wasted your time by not including from where and how I was pasting it in my original post.

Thanks,
Eric
