How can I automate my manual Release Report ?

Mirela Todorova October 13, 2024

Hi all

I need the following monthly report, which I want to set up in Jira (or Confluence) instead of manually doing it.

The info I need to visualize is per team and is on a monthly basis. I also would like to see historical data for past months. I tried doing it in a Dashboard but have not been successful so far

  1. #Completed story points per team, per month (or sprint)
  2. #Completed Releases per team, per month
  3. #Released features (user stories) per team, per month and their titles

Any idea how can I get this info ?

Hi @Mirela Todorova,

Out of the box Jira dashboards can be pretty good at reporting on the real time situation of your team(s), but it does lack the necessary capabilities to report on trends or evolution over time. Your scrum boards do include reports that may provide answers to your questions, but they are hidden in the reports section of your team's boards and not available as dashboard gadgets.

When you want to start reporting across teams and programs, I usually recommend bringing your data into a BI reporting solution. If your company is already using a solution (maybe for other purposes than Jira), you could have a look if you could bring your Jira data into that solution to do the desired reporting there. That can usually be done through API integrations, but the Atlassian Marketplace offers several connectors to make this a lot easier. If not, you might have a look at EazyBI (link is to a demo instance with sample dashboards) as a very solid BI solution you can bring into Jira, definitely capable to report on everything you mentioned.

Hope this helps!

@Mirela Todorova You can create and automate every sort Excel based reports with the following apps:

  1. Better Excel Exporter can produce hyper-flexible custom reports. Here is a ton of report samples, and here are the samples for software development reporting.
  2. Better Excel Automation can integrate the report creation capability to standard Jira Cloud automation rules. You can set up a rule to periodically recreate your report monthly by using a scheduled trigger and emailing the Excel file.

This is roughly how an automation rule looks:

...which sends you an email like this:

jira-data-center-excel-automation-send-xls-result.png

...which has an attachment that could be like this (just an example):

(Discl. the two apps are developed and supported by our team.)
