Highlight backlog items which would fit in the sprint

Tamara Diesenreiter June 5, 2019

Is there a possibility to highlight issue in the backlog which would fit in the sprint according to their storypoints and the average velocity a team has?

I know this functionality from other systems and it makes the planning meeting easiers when always having the average velocity in mind.

Alternative the average velocity as a number visible next to the backlog or above the new open sprint would help.

We are using JIRA Cloud

Hi Tamara,

Building out a forecast for a sprint requires a lot of variables, and natively there are not any built in capabilities to find issues that fit within the teams velocity, and this would be a manual sprint planning exercise.  And I recomend checking out the following blog post goes into more detail on some tips and tricks as well as best practices on sprint planning:

However, an alternative approach and a recommendation to look at is to check out the Portfolio for Jira application, as it sounds like it has the capabilities you're looking for.  Portfolio is a Planning/forecasting tool made by Atlassian that is designed to add in a roadmapping capabilities and sprint planning functionality on top of the existing Jira Software toolset to help define what can be done within a set timeframe based on the input variables and existing data on issues.

Portfolio will use the teams velocity along with other requirements to project what can be done based on the inputs, such as Rank, velocity, capacity, etc..,  and a better breakdown can be seen in the "Scheduling behavior" documentation on how the issues are planned out.

Regards,
Earl
