Hierarchy level above EPICS - cannot use it even with premium subscriptions

Hi Community,

I have an issue. I have set up a team based scrum space that I use with my dev team.

We have the following hierarchy currently:

Epic - task - sub task

I would like to introduce a master epic layer so hierarchy would then change to

Master Epic - Epic - Task - sub task

I managed to create a work type master epic but I am not able to create master epics in the space.

Goal is to have master epics in the timeline view, and if I unfold a master epics, I would be able to see all the epics related to the master epic.

Is it possible to have a master epic in the timeline view?
How can I solve this issue?

hi @Nicola Miori !

To include a new work type into your Jira hierarchy, you need to complete three steps:

  • Create custom work item types (in your case, it's Master Epic)
  • Add them to the schemes
  • Assign them to the corresponding hierarchy levels.

Only after this, your custom work type will function as a new hierarchy level above an epic.

For step-by-step instructions, please see my article Advanced Roadmaps Hierarchy Configuration Guide 2025.

Hi @Nicola Miori

In a timeline view, you can't have a view higher than Epic.

If the hierarchy has been adjusted with levels above Epic, these can only be shown in a Plan.

You can create plans via the Plan option in the sidebar

Hi @Nicola Miori , it appears you are on Premium which does allow for additional work type tiers. Here is an article that will help you fulfill your goals. I believe that this is still restricted to CMP projects but have not check on TMP in awhile.

so you are saying I need a CPM config to make it work?

I am able to set different hierarchy levels, but I cannot apply master epic to the specific agile space. Also the timeline view seems to be set on an epic level by default.

Yes on CPM.

I don't know what you mean by applying "master epic" to agile space.

The Timeline specific view will apply only to the Epic level and below. To include Programs and Initiatives you need to leverage Advanced Roadmaps feature creating a Plan under the Plan menu.
