Hide epic issue type in create issue screen?

Is it possible to hide 'Epic' from the 'Creatue Issue' screen up top, but still have the Epic Issue type in the Issue Type Scheme? Basically we want to experiment with Epics but dont want it to appear in the Create Issue screen for everybody.

Hi Adam,

It seems that currently it is not possible to restrict which issue types that able to be choosed when creating a new issue. This appears to be related to one of the Feature Ticket that already raise, unfortunately it have marked as won't fix by our product manager. You can see the ticket here:

Looking through the comments, most users have submitted a workaround for it, but for the feature to be implemented it seems unlikeable.

We create plugins exactly for this kind of requirements. The following example clarifies it, it is possible and fairly easy to do. The Julian's answer is misleading.
