The difference between Jira Software and Jira Cloud is that "one is an application, the other software as a service", so any other comparisons between them probably don't make a lot of sense - it's like comparing a house with a sea on the moon because they're both just called "tranquility"

I do not think you are asking the right question.

So a brief explanation of some of the terms here might help you frame the question you really want to ask:

  • Jira Core is an application which does issue tracking and to which you can add more functions, via applications and apps
  • Jira Software is a Jira application - you add it to Core to add loads of Agile functionality
  • Jira Service Desk is a Jira application - you add it to Core to add Service Desk functions

These are all available bundled, so generally you find people will get Jira Software or Jira Service Desk, and the bundle automatically includes the Core they need.  Then people add the other application if they need it.  (A typical recommended installation of all three is "get Jira Software working, then add JSD to it via the admin functions")

There are three variations of Jira you can get:

  • Jira Server - download Core/JS/JSD and run it on your own server, or AWS, rackspace, or even get a 3rd party to run it on their servers for you
  • Jira Data Center - same as server, but it's a high-availability clustered installation
  • Jira Cloud - this is Atlassian running Jira for you, as a service.

(All of this applies to Confluence and Bitbucket too, but they don't have applications like Software and Service Desk)

So, I think your question is either "Difference between Server and Cloud" or "Difference between Jira Core and Jira Software".  Does that make sense?

Glad to help.  Hopefully, that explains enough to the CEO, but if they do have further questions, please feel free to carry on here with them!
