Field Level Permissions

Is there a way to limit who can see certain fields of an issue? For example, can something be done so that only a specific group can see the Business Benefit field of an issue created?

No.

Jira does not do field level security. See https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/jra-1330

The options there are pretty much still current - coding, work with javascript, the field security plugin etc.

Just in case somebody stumbles about this issue the best workaround seems using script runner:
