Recently we worked with a partner to which they gave us access to their Jira but only the epic relating to our project.  How can we do this but the reverse where we can give our partner access to our Jira but only the epic they would be working on?

Hello @Bright Iroha

This is one method. There may be others.

You would need to grant your partner personnel access to your Site and your Jira product. You would need to add them to a group that has Browse Access permission in only the one project that contains the Epic. You would need to ensure that those people were not members of any groups that had Browse Permissions access to any other project. That might require that you make a User Group specifically for the partner personnel.

Within the project where you want them to have access you would need to implement Issue Security so that you could specify the Epic (and child issues, I assume) to which you want them to have access and also hide all the other issues in the project from the partner. All issues in the project would need to have an Issue Security Level assigned to them to reveal only the desired issues to the partner.

When issue security is implemented, a person creating an issue can set the issue security level to any level that they themselves are part of. So you would need a level for Issues that should be visible only to your personnel, and a level for issues that should be visible to your personnel and the partner's personnel. Your personnel would be able to choose either of those levels. You would need to educate your personnel about this to ensure they choose the correct level.

You might also want to investigate automatically setting the Issue Security Level when issues are created to ensure that no issues are inappropriately revealed to the partner personnel.

Hi @Bright Iroha,

You could either set up a separate project and grant your partner access to that project. That is fairly easy to manage, but may not be ideal to manage your overall project work.

Or, you can use issue level security to restrict access to your internal issues and grant the desired permissions only to the selected epic for your partner. That keeps all your issues together in one place, but is more delicate to maintain.

See this support article to learn more about configuring issue level security.

Hope this helps!
