Error connecting to database SQL Server

Hello.  I am trying to setup a new instance of Jira 7.2 with a brand new database in SQL Server 2012.  I am going through the Jira setup wizard where I input my database information.  Jira seems to be connecting to the database, but I keep getting the following error:

Error connecting to database

Login failed for user 'jiraservicedesk'. ClientConnectionId:809c7579-5ae9-47f7-8c64-8cbd155cbf50

I have confirmed that the login information in SQL is up-to-date and have followed all the various guides on the Atlassian support site, but still end up with the same problem.

Found the issue.  The particular instance on the database server I was using was configured to use a different port.
