Epics in Business Project won't mark as done

Ashley Wilson February 19, 2019

I have been using the Business Project for managing my Epics for a couple of years.  It seems now that there is no way for me to mark an Epic as done so that it doesn't show in the assignable list.  I use to have a backlog option and that disappeared.  Then I used the workflow to park the Epic Status as Done and now that doesn't seem to be working.  Is there a way to mark an Epic as done in a Business project or do I need to convert it to a Software project?

Hello Ashley,

The Epic Issue type is designed to work in a Jira Software Project type as an Agile issue type, and the Agile related field types that make up the Epic (Epic Name, Epic Link, Epic Status, Epic Color) are also not intended to be used in a Core/Business project, but rather in a Software project in a Scrum or Kanban Board,  Also there is no reporting on the Epic Issue type in a Core project as the functionality is tied exclusively to a Software project type.  Details on using Epics in a software project can be seen here.

If you wish to use an Epic Issue type in a Business project type then the default settings are slightly different to that of a Software type, and you can manually add in the epic issue type to the project as well as all the fields to the screens, but the board behavior is going to be missing the boards functionality designed for use on a Software project type as well as reports designed for epic usage.

To mark an Epic as done this is done via the "Epic Status" field, that is not displayed by default, and when you select the "Mark as Done" option in the Epic Panel on a Jira Software project type from the Board the filed is updated accordingly in the background thus removing the Epic from the Epic Panel.  If you add this field to your core projects edit screen you could manually adjust Epic's status to perform the same action.

Regards,
Earl
