Email notifications stopped working, sending test mail throws 535 Authentication Credentials Invalid

We stopped receiving email notifications and on trying to send a test email from System->Mail->Outgoing mail

An error has occurred with sending the test email:

com.atlassian.mail.MailException: javax.mail.AuthenticationFailedException: 535 Authentication Credentials Invalid
