Dragging a ticket to a column with multiple status does not work as expected

This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Transitioning an Issue

It seems other users have run into this as well and asked questions but without any answer.  As described in the article, if I drag a ticket into a column with multiple associated statii I should see those represented as sections of the column, however this simply doesn't happen.  I have set up the most basic example possible and in fact no matter where in the column I drag the ticket to, the selected transition is always the same.  Please help, this makes dragging tickets on the board useless.

There may only be one valid transition from the old status. If a workflow goes from A > B> C > D > E and you drag it from A to what is the C column the workflow doesn't support doing directly from A to C. Are you thinking it should go through B on the way to C?
